Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China.
Tiananmen Square is a city square in the center of Beijing, China and is named after the Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) located to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. The Square was originally designed and built in 1651. It has been enlarged to four times its original size and was paved in 1958. It covers an area of 109 acres, making it the 7th largest city square in the world, and each flagstone is numbered for ease in assembly of parades.
It contains the Monument to the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong. It has been the site of several important events in Chinese history including the proclamation of the founding of the People’s Republic of China by Mao Zedong on October 1, 1949. A well-planned site for massive gatherings, Tiananmen Square was the site of student demonstrations for decades including: the May Fourth Movement (1919) and the Tiananmen Square incident (1989).
