Melk is a city of Austria, in the federal state of Lower Austria, next to the Wachau valley along the Danube. Melk has a population of 5,257 (2012). It is best known as the site of a massive baroque Benedictine monastery named Melk Abbey.
Melk Abbey is a Benedictine Abbey above the town of Melk, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube river, adjoining the Wachau valley. The Abbey was originally a palace, and it shows. Located on the bank of the Danube River between Salzburg and Vienna, Melk Abbey stands crowned by towers and resplendent in a golden hue. The impressive Baroque ensemble was built in 1702-1736 by architect Jakob Prandtauer.
